The Bleeding & Clotting Disorders Institute is excited to welcome Dr. Robert Mignacca to the clinical staff as a Staff Hematologist/Hospitalist. With over three decades of experience in medicine and a deep-rooted passion for hematology, Dr. Mignacca brings exceptional clinical insight, compassion and dedication to his role in supporting patients with bleeding, blood clotting and other blood disorders.

“I’ve been doing hematology for 30 years and BCDI offers a chance to focus my expertise even further,” Dr. Mignacca said. “The BCDI team is expert at delivering comprehensive care with the patient at the center of the focus, and it’s the patient’s need that drives everything that’s done here. That’s an incredible version of medicine delivery that doesn’t exist everywhere, so I’m excited to be a part of this special team.”

Dr. Mignacca received his Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Irvine and his Doctorate in Medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He then completed an internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, followed by a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Mignacca joins BCDI as a Staff Hematologist/Hospitalist and will work exclusively in Peoria-area hospitals to provide quality care to all hemostasis and thrombosis inpatient consults. Dr. Mignacca is motivated by the opportunity to help close system gaps in care, improve processes for patients and providers, and contribute to BCDI’s comprehensive care model that is driven by patient needs.

“Dr. Mignacca brings a wealth of experience in the bleeding and clotting disorders community,” BCDI CEO & CMO Dr. Michael Tarantino said. “His career focus on patient-centered care aligns perfectly with BCDI’s mission. He will undoubtedly continue to be a strong advocate for our patients and our families. The patients we see in the hospital have complex needs and they will benefit from Dr. Mignacca’s experience and integrative approach to care.”

A hallmark of Dr. Mignacca’s career has been his belief in team-based, patient-centered care. He emphasizes shared decision making and sees the patient and their support system as integral members of the healthcare team. His approach prioritizes open communication, thoughtful collaboration, and a deep respect for each individual’s unique journey.

“For patients that need ongoing outpatient follow up, I’ll be able to reassure them that they’re in great hands even once they’ve left the hospital,” Dr. Mignacca said. “A lot of people struggle with going home, right? They’ve been through something that was life changing. And then they think, ‘Oh my gosh, am I ready to be at home? Do I know what I need to do? Do I know who to call?’ all those kinds of questions and I’ll be able to say, BCDI’s got you covered once you’ve gone home.”

As a Staff Hematologist/Hospitalist at BCDI, Dr. Mignacca will focus on inpatient care for hemostasis and thrombosis, providing around the clock expertise across multiple central Illinois hospitals. He is excited by the opportunity to help close system gaps in care, improve processes for patients and providers, and contribute to a model of care that is driven by patient needs.

“My primary focus will be how do I help this individual patient today, right now at this moment,” Dr. Mignacca said. “From the patient and the health care team’s perspective, how can we make this easier for everybody? Typically, someone going to the hospital is an extremely stressful situation. So, what are the ways that not only can I help them with their health care needs, but how can I make this whole process easier.”

Dr. Mignacca is also a strong advocate for education and research, recognizing them as critical components of progress in hematology. He has participated in numerous clinical trials and is passionate about exploring innovative ways to improve patient outcomes and the day-to-day experience of healthcare delivery.

Outside of work, Dr. Mignacca cherishes time with his growing family, especially his grandson. He is an avid outdoorsman, tinkerer, and dog lover who thrives in nature and enjoys organizing social gatherings with friends.

Dr. Mignacca was drawn to BCDI not only for its commitment to patient-centered care but also for its physician-led model, which he views as a rare and valuable opportunity to make a meaningful impact. He is excited to join a team of passionate, like-minded clinicians, and to contribute to BCDI’s mission of delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to those living with bleeding, blood clotting and other blood disorders.
