The Bleeding & Clotting Disorders Institute is excited to welcome Dr. Melinda Chance as the newest physician to join our clinical team, effective August 26, 2026. As a Staff Hematologist, Dr. Chance brings specialized expertise in hematology and a compassionate approach to caring for patients and families with bleeding and clotting disorders.
“I am so honored to be joining the team at BCDI to focus on hematology, something I have a life-long passion for,” Dr. Chance said. “I am intrigued by the camaraderie and the personalities at BCDI, and just the fact that I get to work with great people. I feel privileged that I get the opportunity to learn and work alongside people as prominent as Dr. Tarantino and the entire team here at BCDI.”
“We are so thrilled to have such a passionate and driven individual, like Dr. Chance, to be joining our clinical care team,” BCDI CEO/CMO Dr. Michael Tarantino said. “Dr. Chance’s enthusiasm for treating individuals with bleeding disorders, commitment to patient centered care, and dedication to ongoing research and advanced treatment will be an invaluable addition to BCDI’s existing team of expert caregivers.”
Originally from the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, Dr. Chance’s journey to BCDI has been shaped by personal experience and a lifelong commitment to improving access to specialized care. Dr. Chance credits her upbringing for playing a key role of inspiring her to serve others and make a lasting impact through healthcare.
“Being raised in Antigua and Barbuda is an integral part of who I am,” said Dr. Chance. “Growing up, I witnessed the limitations in access to specialized medical care. Those experiences, along with watching my mother work as a nurse and seeing the fulfillment she found in caring for patients, inspired me to pursue medicine. I wanted to dedicate my profession to helping people, especially those facing difficult circumstances.”
After earning her medical degree in Antigua and Barbuda, Dr. Chance completed her residency in Orlando, Florida, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in Birmingham, Alabama. During her time at the University of Alabama Birmingham, Dr. Chance was recognized with the prestigious American Society of Hematology Abstract Achievement Award for research in blood disorders. Dr. Chance emphasized that exceptional patient care extends far beyond the physician alone, crediting BCDI’s multidisciplinary approach to shared decision making alongside the patient as an important factor in optimized outcomes.
“Providing comprehensive care is truly a team effort,” Dr. Chance said. “Our social workers, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses, and every member of the care team play an essential role. I’m just one piece of that team, but together we’re able to provide the very best care for our patients, and that’s something I’m really looking forward to being a part of here at BCDI.”
Her approach to medicine centers on building meaningful relationships with patients and families, and hopes that they know that everyone who will walk through the doors at BCDI understands they will never face their journey alone.
“When I first meet a patient, I want to know them as a person, not just their diagnosis,” Dr. Chance said. “I want them to feel comfortable, supported, and confident that they’re talking to someone who genuinely cares about them- you become part of their family. I can’t promise that they’re journey will always be easy, but I can promise you’ll have an entire team that becomes part of your extended family.”
Dr. Chance joins Dr. Michael Tarantino and Dr. Jonathan Roberts as hematologists at BCDI, and she is now accepting new patients. BCDI welcomes Dr. Chance to our growing team of specialists dedicated to delivering world-class, comprehensive care to individuals living with bleeding and blood clotting disorders.
“I am looking forward to taking care of you,” Dr. Chance added. “I’m looking forward to forming lasting relationships with you and your family, and I invite you to come to BCDI for your specialized care.”
